Increased Toxicity toward Mammalian Cells in the Periodate Oxidation Process of Wastewater: The Overlooked Formation of Noniodinated but Nitrogenous Byproducts

Abstract: Periodate (PI) shows promising potential as an oxidant for wastewater treatment; however, its impact on the toxicity of wastewater remains unknown. Here, we found that with 100 μM PI addition, the cytotoxicity of wastewater increased from 4.8 to 7.6 mg-Phenol/L to 9.5 to 12.8 mg-Phenol/L, and genotoxicity increased from 0.3 to 0.9 μg-4-NQO/L.
