Increasing Bioavailability of Trans-Ferulic Acid by Encapsulation in Functionalized Mesoporous Silica

Abstract: Two types of mesoporous materials, MCM-41 and MCM-48, were functionalized by the soft-template method using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) as a modifying agent. The obtained mesoporous silica materials were loaded with trans-ferulic acid (FA). In order to establish the morphology and structure of mesoporous materials, a series of specific techniques were used such as: X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)… Show more

“…The traditional methods for water purification include processes, e.g., sedimentation [ 4 ], flotation [ 5 ], filtration [ 6 ], adsorption [ 7 ], or chlorination [ 8 ], but the associated costs are important and they have limitations (e.g., do not remove the antibiotics). The use of nanomaterials for water purification is still in its infancy.…”

“…Moreover, solventmediated loading can be carried out using adsorption, incipient wetness impregnation, solvent evaporation, supercritical and liquid CO 2 technology, one-pot drug loading and synthesis, chaperone assistance, etc. [35][36][37][38][39][40].…”

“…The main components, polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, are well studied for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities or cytotoxicity. For oral administration of natural active substances, the need for a delivery system leads to specific requirements such as long-term controlled delivery avoiding the burst release effect, protecting the substances from low pH during stomach transit, delivery of substances at specific locations in the digestive system (see Figure 7 ), e.g., duodenum, jejunum, ileum, or colon [ 156 ]. The main flavonol in Aronia is quercetin, which has been extensively tested for its antitumoral applications, exhibiting also gastroprotective, antibacterial, and antiviral activities [ 157 , 158 , 159 ].…”
