Increasing cardiopulmonary aerobic activity improves motor cognitive response time: An inference from preliminary one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study

Abstract: Motor cognitive response time (MCRT) is the time elapsed between presenting a stimulus and the time taken by that individual to respond to that stimulus through a motor performance. After completing aerobic exercise, there are various changes that takes place, one of which might be change in cognitive function. Whether cardiopulmonary aerobic activity/capacity has an impact on MCRT is not explored yet.

“…Motor-cognitive response time is expressed as RT, which represents both the speed of information processing and the motor response of coordinated peripheral movements (Mishra, Dasgupta, Mohan, Aranha, & Samuel, 2018). RT can be assessed in young children to evaluate developmental changes and individual differences in sustained attention and organization of behavior (Weissberg, Ruff, & Lawson, 1990).…”

“…These results may be explained by the beneficial effects of breathing exercises and yoga poses on factors including cardiac output, oxygen delivery capacity, and capillary density. The nature, duration, and intensity of physical activity play crucial roles in enhancing the cardiorespiratory system (Hawkins et al, 2012;Mishra et al, 2018;Satish et al, 2018). Marked enhancements in cardiorespiratory endurance have been noted with aerobic regimens like aquatic sports or cycling (Marandi et al, 2023).…”
