Harmful algal blooms formed by fast-growing, ephemeral macroalgae have expanded worldwide, yet there is limited knowledge of their potential ecological consequences. Here, we select intense green tides formed by Ulva prolifera in the Yellow Sea, China, to examine the ecological consequences of these blooms. Using 28-isofucosterol in the surface sediment as a biomarker of green algae, we identified the settlement region of massive floating green algae in the area southeast of the Shandong Peninsula in the southern Yellow Sea. The responses of the phytoplankton assemblage from the deep chlorophyll-a maximum layer were then resolved using high-throughput sequencing. We found striking changes in the phytoplankton community in the settlement region after an intensive green tide in 2016, characterized by a remarkable increase in the abundance of the pelagophyte Aureococcus anophagefferens, the causative species of ecosystem disruptive brown tides. Our study strongly suggests that the occurrence of massive macroalgal blooms may promote blooms of specific groups of microalgae through alteration of the marine environment.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have occurred frequently in coastal waters of China, imposing negative effects on the marine ecological environment. A dataset of HABs and terrestrial runoff was collected and analyzed in this study, and factors responsible for HABs were further explored. Frequency and expansion of HABs peaked between 2001 and 2007, and although they have declined slightly since then, they have remained quite high. Frequency and accumulative area of HABs peaked in 2004–2005, and most occurred from April to August during these years. HABs occurred frequently in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) estuary, and Prorocentrum donghaiense, Noctiluca scientillans, Karenia mikimotoi, and Skeletonema costatum were the main algal species. The increases of eutrophication, the abnormal sea surface temperature caused by climate and ocean currents, and the species invasion caused by the discharge of ballast water may be important factors for the long-term outbreak of HABs in the Chinese coastal waters. These findings provide a better understanding of HABs in China, which will be helpful to further prevention and control.

BackgroundAlexandrium pacificum is a dinoflagellate species notorious for its rapid growth resulting in large-scale blooms. This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms of A. pacificum under laboratory-simulated rapid growth conditions from the perspective of H3K4me3 modification regulation.Methods and resultsWestern blot was used to detect the modification abundance of H3K4me3 in A. pacificum cultured under different conditions, including high light (HL), high nitrogen (HN), and f/2 medium (control, CT), in the rapid growth exponential phase. The results showed that the modification abundance of H3K4me3 under HL or HN was greater than that under CT. Chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing was used to explore the acting genes of H3K4me3 under different conditions for the first time. Nitrogen metabolism and endocytosis were significantly associated with H3K4me3 regulation under HL. Furthermore, H3K4me3 was also significantly associated with the vitamin metabolism pathway under HN.ConclusionsThese findings demonstrate that H3K4me3 plays a potentially important role in the regulation of the rapid growth of A. pacificum. Such knowledge of a histone modification regulatory network in this dinoflagellate, lays a necessary foundation for future research in related fields.
