Increasing Incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Among Young Men in Korea Between 2003 and 2008

Abstract: Background and Aims Temporal trends in incidence rates of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) can provide valuable clues about etiology. Korea has a draft system, and every male must fulfill his military service. However, according to military rules, patients with CD and UC are not conscripted into the army, and when the disease is diagnosed during military service, patients are relieved from military duties. Such policies provide a unique opportunity to determine the incidence of CD and UC among … Show more

“…This survey investigated the approximate annual number of patients treated in each institution, and does not accurately reflect the incidence and prevalence of IBD in each country. However, marked increases have been reported in the incidence and prevalence of IBD over the last 10-20 years in Japan, Korea and China, suggesting that the results of this survey are consistent with the actual situation [17,18,19,20]. Consistent with previous studies, there are generally more UC than CD patients in the East Asian countries surveyed [1].…”

“…The disease localization and phenotypic behavior at time of diagnosis did not differ between both sexes in our cohort, which is in accord with the above-mentioned study (39) . Congruent with the previous Asian studies, inflammatory and ileo-colonic disease were the most common disease behavior and location (8,14,16,32,34) in this cohort. Though it is well-known fact that the IS , like thiopurines and 6-mercaptopurine are effective for both induction and maintenance of remission in CD (25) , only nearly two-thirds of patients in this cohort were treated with IS therapy for maintenance.…”

“…An even lower incidence rate was reported for Sri Lanka with an incidence of 0.09/100,000 inhabitants in 2008 [12] . Moderate incidence has been reported for Hong Kong, China with an incidence of 1.25 per 100,000 individuals in 2011 [13] and Korea, with an incidence approaching 5.1/100,000 for CD in 2008 [14] . The highest reported incidence rates worldwide come from Nova Scotia, Canada (incidence of 20.2 per 100,000 individuals in 2000) [15] , Geelong, Australia (incidence of 17.…”
