Increasing Incidence of Melanoma Among Middle-Aged Adults: An Epidemiologic Study in Olmsted County, Minnesota

Abstract: Objective To identify changes in incidence of cutaneous melanoma over time in the fastest-growing segment of the US population, middle-aged adults. Patients and Methods Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project resource, we identified patients aged 40 to 60 years who had a first lifetime diagnosis of melanoma between January 1, 1970, and December 31, 2009, in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Incidence of melanoma and overall and disease-specific survival rates were compared by age, sex, year of diagnosis, and stage… Show more

“…Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, with low survival rates once it becomes unresectable (10). It is a molecularly heterogeneous disease and some of the key alterations in signaling pathways that participate in disease development and progression have been identified.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Although direct hematogenous dissemination may occur without sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis, lymph nodes are often the first site of metastasis and are critical for tumor staging and prognosis in patients with melanoma. 6 The relative facility of melanoma and other cancer cells to intravasate into lymphatics may rest on the structural characteristics of these vessels.…”

“…Its incidence has increased in recent years and this upward trend is expected to continue in many countries, despite primary prevention efforts (2)(3)(4)(5). It has been postulated that the trend is due to increased exposure to environmental factors acting together with increased genetic susceptibility (6).…”
