Increasing incidence of rotator cuff surgery: A nationwide registry study in Chile

Abstract: Background The rotator cuff surgery (RCS) incidence is rising rapidly in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Despite this, multiple factors limit patients’ access to surgery. In Latin America, barriers to orthopedic surgery have been largely ignored. The purpose of this study was to calculate the rate of RCS in Chile between 2008 and 2018, investigating possible associated factors to access such as age, sex, and the health insurance. Methods … Show more

“…In degenerative rotator cuff diseases, several risk factors have been identified, with age playing a significant role in its development [4]. Consequently, this condition is notably prevalent among adults age over 50 years old and within the elderly population, with an anticipated increase in prevalence as the population continues to age [5][6][7][8][9]. The essential role of the rotator cuff in shoulder function renders addressing this pathology critical.…”

“…Small tears may only limit the function but large tears result in an imbalance in the joint kinematics. RCT causes pain and reduces the ability to perform activities of daily living [ 10 , 11 ]. Thus, surgical repair of RCTs is a considerable procedure to alleviate shoulder pain, to rectify tears, and when other treatments fail [ 9 ].…”

“… 42 , 45 Rotator cuff repair is currently among the most performed shoulder surgical procedures, 19 and its incidence is rising rapidly. 11 , 46 Techniques for rotator cuff repair have evolved from open techniques to arthroscopically assisted mini-open techniques and all-arthroscopic techniques, 8 and suture anchors are currently the most commonly used implants in rotator cuff repair. Suture anchor repair can primarily be divided into single-row (SR) or double-row techniques; these 2 types of techniques have constituted the basis for various other techniques such as the modified Mason-Allen suture bridge technique, knotless suture anchor technique, transosseous tunnel technique, 7 and cruciate ligament repair techniques.…”
