Increasing Resident Physician Well-Being through a Motivational Fitness Curriculum: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Introduction. Healthcare professionals who participate in regular exercise better manage job related stressors, utilize fewer sick days, and discuss fitness with patients at increased rates. Although resident physicians are aware of the health benefits of exercise their rates of exercise are much lower than among medical trainees and practicing physicians. Resident physicians have reported lack of time for traditional structured workouts as one of the greatest barriers to fitness. This study sought to increase… Show more

“…In the regression analysis, those who did not exercise were 2.1 times (95% CI 1.04 – 4.46, p = 0.038) more likely to have anxiety than those who exercise often or regularly. Nutting et al [ 47 ] have conducted an intervention trial in which, after 10 months of physical training, the majority of the participants showed a significant reduction in indices of anxiety symptoms. To date, most of the effort directed toward stress reduction has been geared toward psychological interventions or institutional changes to accommodate the need of trainees [ 48 ].…”

“…A previous study that compared faculty physicians and residents on a number of quality-of-life measures found that residents exercise less than faculty, with 41% of residents reporting that they exercised three to five times per week as compared to 54% of faculty physicians [ 95 ]. Identifying ways to facilitate exercise among healthcare trainees is a promising approach to increase well-being and prevent deleterious mental health outcomes [ 96 , 97 ].…”

“…When compared to those who did not exercise, the percentage of anxiety-free participants who exercised weekly was higher, and this percentage increased with frequency. Regular physical activity improves the ability of medical personnel to manage stressful work-related emotions, and a quick exercise improves the well-being of resident trainees [32,33]. This shows that having a demanding clinical burden that prevents residents from getting enough rest or exercise is a risk factor for mental health.…”
