Increasing the Detection Rate of Congenital Heart Disease During Routine Obstetric Screening Using Cine Loop Sweeps

Abstract: The use of cine loop sweeps has the potential to increase the detection of fetal cardiac defects without increasing the rate of false-positive findings or increasing the interpretation and decision-making times.

“…Alternatively, using cineloop sweeps provides the sonographer and the interpreting physician with the opportunity to perform an assessment of the fetal heart in real-time. 51 The use of cineloops and real-time assessment of the fetal heart has been suggested by a number of authors as a means of improving the screening process. 36,52 The use of cineloop sweeps will provide many more images of the fetal heart, establishing critical anatomic relationships and cardiac dynamics.…”

“…The use of cine-loop sweeps has been found to increase the detection rate of CHD by 38% for nonexperts (radiologists) and 36% for experts (pediatric cardiologist and pediatric cardiology sonographer) compared with the use of still images only. 1 The implementation of a standardized assessment technique of the fetal heart in real time, using cine-loop sweeps represents a practical approach that can be used by the majority of screening centers. 1 The standardized technique is limited to those centers with the capability of storing cine-loops as part of the clinical record.…”

“…A prerequisite for recommending the workflow strategy with standardized ultrasound examination protocols stored as cine-loops is that no diagnostic information is lost in the process (6). The clinical experience found in the literature from different areas where cine-loop documentation for US examinations has been used, has shown positive results (7)(8)(9)(10)(11).…”

“…Some review can be made if moving sequences are saved (14). According to Pallan et al (43), the value of reviewing static US images is very limited and is associated with lower diagnostic specificity (7,8).…”
