Increasing Use of “Ecstasy“ (MDMA) and other Hallucinogens on a College Campus

Abstract: We conducted a random survey of illicit drug use by undergraduate students at a private southern university in 1990 and compared the results with results from a similar 1986 survey of that college's student population. During the 4 years since the first study, the prevalence of cocaine use declined from 39% to 21%, and use of traditional amphetamines declined from 22% to 12%. No significant differences were found in the use of marijuana--68% in 1986, 64% in 1990--or in use of LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide)--… Show more

“…The American study compared results of similar surveys performed at the same university in 1986 and 1990 (Cuomo et al, 1994). Although the validity of the data may be questioned by the low response rate, they showed that the percentage of students that had used mescaline/psilocybin (grouped together on the questionnaires) increased from 8% to 24% during the five-year period of the study (Cuomo et al, 1994). Every two years since the early 1990's, the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario, has sponsored the Ontario Student Drug Use Survey.…”

“…This transitional period typically involves major role changes in many domains of life (e.g., leaving high school, going to college or other postsecondary training, starting a career, becoming married, or having children), and it has been suggested to be a heightened risk period for the onset of club drug use and heavy drinking (Chilcoat and Schütz, 1996;Cuomo et al, 1994;Schulenberg and Maggs, 2002;von Sydow et al, 2002). Hence, it provides an illustration of variations in drug use through different developmental stages.…”
