Independent component analysis of natural image sequences yields spatio-temporal filters similar to simple cells in primary visual cortex

Abstract: Simple cells in the primary visual cortex process incoming visual information with receptive ¢elds localized in space and time, bandpass in spatial and temporal frequency, tuned in orientation, and commonly selective for the direction of movement. It is shown that performing independent component analysis (ICA) on video sequences of natural scenes produces results with qualitatively similar spatio-temporal properties. Whereas the independent components of video resemble moving edges or bars, the independent co… Show more

“…Our main motivation for introducing two types of spatiotemporal RF profiles as shown in Fig. 2 (i.e., stationary and moving envelope) is to explore if there are any significant qualitative differences in the computational properties of one model over the other, to examine the plausibility of suggestions previously made in this context (DeAngelis et al1993a(DeAngelis et al , b, 1995van Hateren and Ruderman 1998) and to check if this is an issue of importance.…”

“…The spatiotemporal power spectrum of such passively viewed natural scenes predicts human visual sensitivity (Dong and Atick 1995a;Dong 1997) and response properties of neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the cat (Dong and Atick 1995b). Extending independent component analysis (ICA) from the purely spatial to the spatiotemporal domain on such data predicts the spatio-temporal properties of simple cells (van Hateren and Ruderman 1998). In analogy to sparse coding, different variants of the coding principle ''temporal coherence'', all rooted in Fö ldiak's (1991) trace rule, have been successfully applied to natural stimuli.…”

“…Commercial movies are subject to filmmaker bias, and recordings from vehicles (van Hateren and Ruderman 1998) are restricted to a specific type of environment. To overcome these restrictions, Betsch et al (2004) recorded movies using a camera mounted on the head of a freely behaving cat.…”

“…Recently, there has been a growing interest in learning visual features using biologically-inspired networks, such as, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) [11] and Independent Subspace Analysis [12]. In [13], Le shows that using their learned 3D (Spatiotemporal) filters by ISA, the action recognition performance is comparable to other hand- Fig.…”
