Index of science reading awareness: An interactive‐constructive model, test verification, and grades 4–8 results

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop and verify the Index of Science Reading Awareness (ISRA) based on a model of an efficient, successful interactive-constructive science reader and three independent metacognitive awareness domains. Several researchers have noted the need for efficient, reliable, and valid measures of metacognition. ISRA data collected on 532 students (Grades 4-8) were analyzed using factor analyses, linear structural modeling, and analyses of variance (ANOVAs) to help verify the model an… Show more

“…Self-management involves planning strategies, monitoring understanding, and adjusting action. Thinking of metacognitive awareness and self-management in terms of three components helps clarify the image, but recent research has not been able to document their independent nature by means of factor analysis and linear structured modeling techniques (Schraw & Dennison, 1994;Yore et al, 1998).…”

“…The efficient, successful science reader is a flexible, strategic person who is aware of and manages science reading, uses science text, and selects and substitutes compensatory science reading strategies as needed to construct understanding within a specific sociocultural context (Yore et al, 1998). Middle school science readers exhibit performance patterns similar to younger narrative text readersrereading, taking notes, or seeking help from the teacher or established expert peerbut they are largely unaware of using prior knowledge or external sources to negotiate meaning and resolve reading difficulties (Craig & Yore, 1995.…”

“…instruction in the science curriculum (see, for example, Brozo & Flynt, 2007;Fang, 2006;Romance & Vitale, 1992;Saul, 2002). Yore, Craig and Maguire (1998) clearly stated that students' understanding of their reading processes is one of the future directions in science reading research. Yore and his colleagues (2004) also reiterated the importance of critical thinking and language in future science reading research.…”
