“…While, China's march into Africa has often been welcomed with fear and disapproval from the West (Mawdsley, 2008), African commentators have tended to be more positive (Akomolafe, 2006). There is also an extensive and growing literature on the nature of China and other Asian countries' increasing involvement in Africa (Alden et al, 2008;Carmody & Owusu, 2007;Guerroro & Manji, 2008;Goldtstein et al, 2006;Kitissou, 2007;Naidu, 2008;Carmody, 2008). More so, important conceptual frameworks have been developed to investigate the impact of the large fast growing "Asian driver" economies of China and India on sub-Saharan Africa via, inter alia, channels of trade, investment and governance (Kaplinsky & Messner, 2008;Carmody, 2008).…”

“…However, not all African Commonwealth countries are targeted with the same degree of eagerness and offered the same conditions. Rather, SCAAP units, which may be exchanged with any of the five aid modalities, are allocated according to the perceived importance of the Sources: (Agrawal, 2007;Chanana, 2009;ICCR, 2009;Katti, Chahoud, & Kaushik, 2009;MEA, 2009a;Naidu, 2008;Naidu & Herman, 2009 No doubt the transfers from India to its African partners were small in the first three or four decades of these programmes' existence, and although India's development assistance to Africa is still insignificant in financial terms, it has been boosted massively over the last few years. The new importance given to development cooperation was sparked by the 2003 budget speech, which set the unsuccessful 'India Development Initiative' in motion (Kragelund, 2008;Price, 2004).…”

Unlike China however, Indian investment is notably more diverse in terms of its regional as well as sectoral spreads (Naidu 2008a). India also has a significant diaspora in Africa which is an important conduit and increasingly plays a significant role in furthering the relationship.…”
