Diversity in the workplace has attracted significant interest in organisations that want to attract and retain talented employees. Breakthrough innovation requires a wider knowledge base, and organisations increasingly rely on multidisciplinary R&D teams to identify scientific developments that bridge gaps and reduce time to market. However, research on the performance implications of R&D team diversity remains limited and the empirical evidence inconsistent. This paper investigates the impact of surface and deep‐level diversity on R&D teams’ innovative performance and how diversity dimensions interact to drive innovation. We find supportive evidence that R&D team characteristics influence innovation outcomes, confirming our hypothesising that diversity is a valuable strategy for an organisation to pursue as it provides greater cognitive ability. Each diversity facet however has its own distinct effects depending on the novelty of innovation and industry. Yet, diversity is not solely positive and excessive heterogeneity could be detrimental to R&D team performance. Our findings suggest that high diversity in gender or skills in cognitively diverse teams might be negative attributes to take into consideration. Senior managers and organisations should therefore consider the appropriate mix of capabilities to benefit from creativity in diverse R&D teams and avoid possible conflict and distrust associated with diversity.

1 ResumenUna de las medidas más destacadas para la innovación es el análisis de patentes. A pesar de la importancia relativa que se ha asignado al estudio de las patentes, la literatura muestra una discrepancia respecto a la certeza de usarla como una medida de alcance de objetivos. En el presente artículo se señalan los principales debates al respecto; mostrando estudios y evidencias que soportan el uso de las patentes como medición de la innovación, y estudios y evidencias que van en contra de dicho uso. A partir de las evidencias encontradas, se concluye que la efectividad de la medición de innovación mediante patentes es altamente dependiente de múltiples factores y, por lo tanto, las patentes no son adecuadas para medir la innovación. Se sugiere el uso de indicadores derivados de las patentes para aprovechar la información que éstas contienen.Palabras clave: innovación, investigación y desarrollo, patentes, medición. AbstractPatent analysis is one of the most highlighted innovation measures. Despite the relative importance given to patent studies, the reviewed literature shows disagreement regarding its certainty as a measure to achieve goals. In this document, the main discussions towards this topic are reviewed. It shows studies and evidences that support patent use as an innovation measurement, and likewise, it shows studies and evidences that contradict its use for the purpose mentioned above. From the evidences collected, we conclude that the effectiveness of patents to measure innovation is highly dependent on multiple factors, so they are not an adequate tool for this purpose. The use of alternate patent indicators is recommended in order to take advantage of the information that patents contain.Keywords: Innovation, patents, research and development, measurement. ResumoUma das medidas mais destacadas para a inovação é a análise de patentes. Apesar da importância relativa que tem sido atribuída ao estudo das patentes, a literatura mostra uma discrepância com respeito à confiança de usá-la como uma medida de alcance dos objetivos. No presente artigo, assinalam-se os principais debates ao respeito, mostrando estudos e evidências que sustentam o uso das patentes como medição da inovação, e estudos e evidências que vão contra este uso. A partir das evidências encontradas, conclui-se que a efetividade da medição de inovação mediante patentes é altamente dependente de múltiplos fatores e, portanto, as patentes não são adequadas para medir a inovação. Women in Limnology in the Iberian Peninsula: biases, barriers and recommendationsGender biases in science have received increasing attention in recent years. Underrepresentation at the highest academic levels and bias in publication are some of the factors affecting women in science. In this study, we assessed the situation of women in Limnology, a specific field of natural sciences, within the geographic context of the Iberian Peninsula. We used a multi-faceted approach to diagnose the situation, and we propose guidelines to reduce gender gaps in Limnology. The database of members of the Iberian Limnological Association (AIL) was used to analyse the variability between genders at different professional stages. Data was also compiled on plenary speakers who attended conferences organized by different associations (AIL, SEFS and ASLO) to assess women's visibility. A published data set was used to identify leadership patterns in publications with respect to gender. Finally, a survey of AIL members was conducted to understand their perception of the barriers in science that result in differences between the genders. This study recognized differences at the recruitment level (more tenured positions are held by men), visibility at conferences (fewer women are invited as plenary speakers) and publication as team leaders (men have more publications as first and last authors). Survey participants recognised the scarcity of grants/funding, difficulties in balancing life and career, and the scarcity of job opportunities as the three main barriers in science, regardless of gender. Yet, women identified family-related barriers such as having children and gender biases more frequently. Overall, our study indicates that there is a general gender bias in the field of Limnology in the Iberian Peninsula; however, it is slightly lower than the reported levels in Europe and for other disciplines in Spain. Finally, we provide a list of recommendations to balance the current biases based on suggestions made by the participants of a round table held at the XVII Congress of the AIL (Santander, 62 Sánchez-Montoya et al.July 2014). We encourage associations in natural sciences and the AIL in particular to use this study as a guideline for best practices as well as a baseline for future analysis of gender biases.
