Indications and complications of tube thoracostomy with improvised underwater seal bottles

Abstract: Background:Tube thoracostomy is a lifesaving and frequently performed procedure in hospitals where the expertise and necessary tools are available. Where the ideal drainage receptacle is unavailable, the underwater seal device can be improvised with bottled water plastic can especially in emergency situations.Aims and Objectives:To determine the frequencies of the various indications and complications of tube thoracostomy with improvised underwater seal.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study with a stru… Show more

“…Unlike some improvised pleural suction devices and water seals used in people, the devices demonstrated in this paper would have a lower likelihood of providing a source of contamination. 5 The main elements of the devices are derived from medical equipment, routinely used during sterile surgeries. The nonsterile elements that contact the inside of the devices include the straw and binder clip, both of which have the potential to be sterilized and assembled in a sterile fashion using surgical gloves.…”

“…The core concept used to design these improvised pleural drainage devices may also be applied using alternate brands of suction containers, with the only requirement being 3 openings on the lid of the suction unit. Unlike some improvised pleural suction devices and water seals used in people, the devices demonstrated in this paper would have a lower likelihood of providing a source of contamination 5 . The main elements of the devices are derived from medical equipment, routinely used during sterile surgeries.…”
