Indications of Testicular Biopsy in Sterile Men

Abstract: The authors analyse some of the results of examination of 607 sterile patients, in which probatory excision from the testicles had been performed. They have reached the following conclusions. Testicular biopsy is a decisive diagnostic method in the case of a repeated finding of azoospermia. In these cases, the following three conditions must be satisfied before probatory excision is carried out:

“…The discrepancy (15%) found between the testicular biopsy and testicular ultrasonography results indicates that the biopsy samples were more accurate than the ultrasound tests in the exploration of the testicular parenchyma. Ultimately, testicular biopsy is the decisive diagnostic method in cases of repeated findings of azoospermia in men (Raboch and Zahor ) and in the investigation of infertility in other animals (Galina ; Veeramachaneni et al. ; Meyers‐Wallen ).…”

Ultimately, testicular biopsy is the decisive diagnostic method in cases of repeated findings of azoospermia in men (Raboch and Zahor 1961) and in the investigation of infertility in other animals (Galina 1971;Veeramachaneni et al 1986; Meyers-Wallen 1991). The similar sensitivities of testicular biopsy and testicular ultrasonography support the use of biopsies as a diagnostic tool in the prediction of testicular function and the evaluation of potential breeding ability in dromedaries.…”
