Indicators for Common Crossing Structural Health Monitoring With Track-Side Inertial Measurements

Abstract: This paper focuses on the experimental study of an alteration in the railway crossing dynamic response due to the rolling surface degradation during a crossing’s lifecycle. The maximal acceleration measured with the track-side measurement system as well as the impact position monitoring show no significant statistical relation to the rolling surface degradation. The additional spectral features are extracted from the acceleration measurements with a wavelet transform to improve the information usage. The relia… Show more

“…The unevenness in rail surface (for example 0.03 mm or deeper) can cause significant vertical acceleration of unsprung mass with the increase in railway speed and axle load (Table 1). Therefore, the importance of inspection [8][9][10][11] and preventive maintenance on the modern railway infrastructure is essential.…”

“…Numerical predictions of the long-term accumulation of plastic deformation and wear are shown in [24]. Development of indicators for structural health monitoring of common crossing, with track-side inertial measurements, is presented in [25]. The time and spectral features were extracted from inertial measurements, principal component analysis was used to develop the indicator.…”
