Indices for the assessment of environmental pollution of the Baltic Sea coasts: Integrated assessment of a multi-biomarker approach

Abstract: Two mathematical methods to assess the ''health status'' of flounder (Platichthys flesus), eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) and blue mussel (Mytilus spp.) populations of the Baltic Sea were applied on selected biomarker data collected during the EU project ''BEEP'' (Biological Effects of Environmental Pollution on Marine Coastal Ecosystems). The Bioeffect Assessment Index (BAI) and the Integrated Biomarker Index (IBR) combine different biomarkers to single values, which can be used to describe the toxically-induced… Show more

“…Since the IBR value is directly dependent on the number of biomarkers in the set, the obtained IBR value must be divided by the number (N = 6) of biomarkers used and termed as IBR/n (Broeg and Lehtonen, 2006). Biomarker were ordered according to their level of biological complexity from genotoxicity (COMET) to population fitness (SOS), with subcellular (LMS), cellular (MDA), and tissue (CAT, SOD) biomarkers in between.…”

“…In the last decades, environmental genotoxicity in coastal areas of the Baltic and the North Seas was assessed in the number of studies (Al-Sabti and Hardig, 1990;Bresler et al, 1999;Baršienė et al, 2000, Thiriot-Quiévreux and Wolowicz, 2001Bombail et al, 2001;Frenzilli et al, 2004;Schiedek et al, 2006;Kopecka et al, 2006;Broeg and Lehtonen, 2006;Lehtonen et al, 2006;Stachnik and Wolowicz, 2007;Köhler and Ellesat, 2008). However, there is a lack of information on genotoxic and cytotoxic effects in the offshore areas of the Baltic and the North Seas.…”

“…The use of indices to summarize biomarker responses for the evaluation of contaminant-induced stress has been increasingly employed and this approach is useful from an environmental management perspective (Beliaeff and Burgeot 2002;Broeg and Lehtonen 2006;Hagger et al 2009). In this study, the IBRv2 index based on the reference deviation concept was applied to integrate biomarker responses into a stress index (Sanchez et al 2013).…”
