Indigenous traditional medicine: in vitro anti-giardial activity of plants used in the treatment of diarrhea

Abstract: The ethnopharmacology for treatment of parasitic infections facilitates and directs the search for new chemical entities. In this direction, this study evaluated the cytotoxicity in vitro, against trophozoites of Giardia lamblia, of aqueous extracts of leaves Achyrocline satureioides (Lam.) DC., barks of Eugenia uniflora L., aerial parts of Foeniculum vulgare Miller, and barks of Psidium guajava L. These plants are traditionally used for the treatment of diarrhea by the indigenous population Mbyá-Guarani, loca… Show more

“…Its aerial parts present many pharmacological properties, including anti-giardial (Brandelli et al, 2009), antimicrobial (Holetz et al, 2002;Coelho de Souza et al, 2004), and toxicity in fish hepatopancreas (Fiuza et al, 2009). So far, no reports have been found of antitumor activity or lethality in brine shrimp bioassay.…”

“…After centrifugation at 600 rpm for 10min at 4 °C cysts concentrated at the 0.85-0.4M sucrose interface were collected and washed again. Purified cysts were resuspended in distilled water and stored at 4 °C for a maximum of 3 ysprior to use (11,29).…”

“…Initial experiments demonstrated that survival of most of the primary cultures could be favorably affected by the addition of bile and by increasing the serum component to 20% (26). Therefore the excystation medium used consisted of filter-sterilized TYI-S-33 culture medium, with bovine bile added (11,27), supplemented with 20% heat inactivated fetal calf serum. Screw capped borosilicate glass culture tubes containing 8 ml of the medium, supplemented with penicillin (500 iu/ml) and streptomycin (500 ug/ml), and were incubated at 37 °C in a slant.…”

“…Its leaves have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of diarrhea (Brandelli et al, 2009), inflammation (Schapoval et al, 1994), hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hypertriglycemia (Arai et al, 1999;Matsumura et al, 2000) and hypertension (Consolini et al, 1999). In addition, they have been used as an antimalarial and spasmolytic agent (Wazlawik et al, 1997;Morioka et al, 2000) as well as an inhibitor of DNA polymerase, maltase, sucrase, and α-glucosidase (Lee et al, 2000;Matsumura et al, 2000).…”
