Individual and Environmental Factors Affecting Adaptive Behavior of Toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Role of Parents’ Socio-cultural Level

Abstract: The effects of environmental factors [including Socio-Economic Status, Cultural Capital, and Social Capital (Socio-Cultural Level) of both parents] on the Vineland-II adaptive behavior dimensions of toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in addition to individual factors, was investigated in 148 Italian toddlers (82% males), aged 18 to 37 months with ASD. Toddlers’ age and Griffiths Mental Development Scales general development affected all of the adaptive behavior dimensions, with negative and positive… Show more

“…Third, the results of this study show relationships between different predictor variables and QoL scores, but causal relationships were not established. Finally, we were unable to provide additional data on the relationship between QoL and other relevant variables, such as adaptive behavior, the presence of associated conditions, informants' demographic characteristics, parental socioeconomic status, or family factors (Bacherini et al, 2021; Balboni et al, 2020; 2021; Haddad et al, 2018; Lee, Knafl, et al, 2021; Menardo et al, 2017), which could increase the value of the explained variance. Future investigations on individual QoL in this population should therefore study the role of other variables, especially those that are susceptible to change (Shields et al, 2018; 2020) and that could act as mediating and moderating variables of QoL-related personal outcomes (Gómez, Schalock, & Verdugo, 2020).…”

“…Adaptive behavior can be learned, and better adaptive skills increase the probability of the social inclusion of the individual and the improvement of his/her quality of life [32]. Therefore, it is important to determine the factors that may influence the adaptive behavior of an individual with ASD in early childhood [33]. In subjects with ASD, adaptive behavior has been shown to be more strongly correlated with optimum outcomes in adulthood than cognitive functioning [34].…”

“…Several investigations have found how SES, Cultural Capital, and Social Capital have different relationships with different aspects of human behavior. Consider, for example, the Big Five personality profiles of adolescents [ 43 , 45 ], and adaptive behavior [ 42 ], and emotional and behavioral problems [ 44 ] of toddlers with autism spectrum disorders.…”

“…In the first study, we developed a brief version of the Italian PSCS (PSCS-Brief Italian Version). First, we selected the most informative items of the Italian version of the PSCS ( [41]; see the following for the use of this scale: [42][43][44][45]), in accord with the methodology proposed by Wang et al [37]. Then, we ran a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to investigate the factorial structure of the selected items.…”
