Individual cardiovascular responsiveness to work-matched exercise within the moderate- and severe-intensity domains

Abstract: Purpose We investigated the cardiovascular individual response to 6 weeks (3×/week) of work-matched within the severe-intensity domain (high-intensity interval training, HIIT) or moderate-intensity domain (moderate-intensity continuous training, MICT). In addition, we analyzed the cardiovascular factors at baseline underlying the response variability. Methods 42 healthy sedentary participants were randomly assigned to HIIT or MICT. We applied the region of… Show more

“…HR was collected throughout all sessions using a HR belt (3-channel ECG; custo med GmbH, Ottobrunn, Germany). Based on this training monitoring, HR was adjusted to fitness changes over the weeks (for details, see Mattioni Maturana et al, 2021b ). This ensured that participants were always exercising within the originally prescribed relative intensity of exercise.…”

“…In this way, we retrieved one averaged dataset for each week. Thereafter, the weekly average response was compared with zones of smallest worthwhile difference around the prescribed heart rate [for further details, please see (Maturana et al, 2021 )].…”

“…In this way, we retrieved one averaged dataset for each week. Thereafter, the weekly average response was compared with zones of smallest worthwhile difference around the prescribed heart rate [for further details, please see (Maturana et al, 2021)]. Minimum adherence: in order for participants to be included in the final analyses, a minimum of 15 out of the 18 prescribed exercise sessions in each training period had to be completed (minimum adherence = 83.3%).…”

“…Those initially presenting in the lowest quintile ofV O 2 max appear to have a potentiated capacity to experience the greatest health reward in response to increases inV O 2 max (Harber et al, 2017). It appears that baselineV O 2 max affects subsequent response to training whereby a higher baselineV O 2 max hinders the potential for further adaptation (Astorino & Schubert, 2014;Saltin et al, 1969;Sisson et al, 2009 (Astorino & Schubert, 2014;Hautala et al, 2006;Maturana et al, 2021). It is plausible that a ceiling may exist in those with an already developed phenotype whereby the ability to elicit a metabolic strain potent enough to invoke adaptive signalling becomes diminished.…”
