Individual Differences in Selective Attention to Information Graphics in Televised Sports

Abstract: Despite the ubiquitous presence of information graphics in sport telecasts, little research has explored how at-home spectators allocate attention to them or individual differences in selective attention. This study demonstrates two viewer characteristics that impact attention to information graphics in two excerpts from the 2012 World Series. “…Learning differences between news modalities seem to be mainly driven by the structure in which the news is presented that increases user control and selectivity, instead of the difference between reading from paper or from a screen. This finding also adds to mass communication and cognitive psychology research (Buschman & Miller, 2007;Cummins et al, 2016;Uncapher et al, 2011) by confirming that in an online news environment, attention is driven by top-down processes, while in an offline news environment, attention is driven by bottom-up processes. In other words, when reading news on a website, individual characteristics decide which information is attended, while when reading news in the paper, editorial cues that show the salience of information guide which information is attended.…”

“…Top-down attention processes note that individual preferences guide what information is attended, while bottom-up attention processes note that salient information or cues guide which information is attended. Based on previous reasoning (Cummins, Gong, & Kim, 2016), we argue that top-down processes are more important in a website environment. We expect that, when reading news on a website, citizens have more control over the flow of information and as a consequence, attention to news emerges from individual preferences (i.e., through increased user control and thus selective attention).…”

Thirty-one students completed this pilot, and the following words were the top scoring for each category:…”
