“…Adding to the findings of Dagg and Windsor (1971) and Halpin (1974) that gerbils are able to discriminate between the urine from two male gerbils (individual, identification), this study contributed to a better understanding of the olfactory social communication system in the gerbiJ.…”

“…Although Dagg and Windsor (1971) found that several young gerbils could be trained in a Tmaze to discriminate between various urine odors, they did not investigate preference or other reactions. Halpin (1974) found that male gerbils were capable of discrirninating between individual male gerbil urine odors, suggesting a function of individual identification.…”

“…The scent of ventral gland secretion is known to be individually distinctive (Halpin, 1974), and has been implicated in individual discrimination as well as in mate recognition (Halpin, 1974(Halpin, , 1986Kumari & Prakash, 1981a, b;Kittrell et al, 1982;Fullenkamp et al, 1985). Compared to scent of the ventral gland secretion, 'signal heaps' containing urine may convey more complex information indicating not only species and individual identity, but sex, age, social and reproductive status as well.…”
