Individual Quality of Life in Chronic Kidney Disease

Abstract: Background and objectives: Novel individualized quality-of-life (IQOL) measures permit patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to nominate unique areas of their lives that contribute to their well-being. This study assessed for differences in domains nominated by patients with CKD. We also examined the strength of association between (1) multidimensional health-related quality-of-life measures and IQOL and (2) Results: Patients with CKD nominated many domains on the SEIQOL-DW, but family and health were th… Show more

“…As part of a previously described (24,25) larger prospective cohort study investigating memory, sleep, and quality of life in adult, Englishspeaking patients with advanced CKD, we approached patients during their routine CKD clinic visit, dialysis clinic visit, or their initial evaluation at a kidney transplantation clinic between March 2004 and October 2007. Exclusion criteria included extremes of age and active, severe medical or psychiatric illness as has been previously described (24,25).…”

“…Health-related quality of life is subjective and is influenced by a person's beliefs, which change over time (Abdel-Kader et al, 2009;Howard, Mattacola, Howell, & Lattermann, 2011;Schwartz, Andresen, Nosek, & Krahn, 2007). This change is termed response shift (Fayers & Machin, 2016;Howard et al, 2011;Schwartz et al, 2007), and this occurs when an individual with a chronic disease adapts to their illness and learns to cope with their altered health state.…”

“…From the beginning of the dialysis era, the issue of optimal dialysis dose and frequency has been a central topic in the delivery of dialysis treatment. Because among patients with end-stage renal disease who are treated with HD, solute clearance during dialysis is determinant of mortality and low urea reduction ratios during dialysis are associated with increased odds ratios for death [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Many patients enter for regular HD, are older and they are prone to some complications of hemodialysis.…”

“…Many patients enter for regular HD, are older and they are prone to some complications of hemodialysis. Patient's age by itself affects the HD procedure and may be complicated by the resultant problems, one of which is dialysis efficiency [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Low dialysis efficiency may influence nutrition and facilitate insidious malnutrition [21][22][23][24][25].…”
