“…Kazakhstan, like other post-Soviet states, has, for a long time, experienced the ideological influence of collectivism, as opposed to the individualism prevailing in the west. Therewith, according to research, the need to comply with formal norms and the willingness to report the facts of corruption are more closely related to individualism (Amini et al , 2021). Because at present, with the transition to a market economy, the individualistic mood in society is increasing, one should count on a greater willingness of citizens to report the facts of corruption.…”

“…3 While some of these extensive questions are also included in the waves 2006 and 2010, the 2016 wave is the only one to date that contains questions on individuals' corruption aversion, our primary dependent variable. The 2016 LiTS wave has been recently used in an insightful variety or works related to socio-economic and institutional aspects in transition economies (Adserà et al, 2021;Amini et al, 2022;Guriev & Melnikov, 2018;Ivlevs & Hinks, 2018;Ivlevs et al, 2021;Mavisakalyan et al, 2021).…”

“…This universalistic individualism has also been linked to greater support for gender equality and womens' economic rights Williamson, 2019, 2022). It can also be associated with greater support for acting against deleterious but traditional social practices such as corruption (Amini et al, 2022) and more generally it can be associated with greater levels of pro-sociality (Irwin, 2009 andSabatini, 2015).This definition of individualism has been criticised, notably for its complexity as it bundles together different notions of self-determination and rejection of hierarchy or willingness to challenge the status quo (Beugelsdijk and Welzel, 2018;Singelis et al, 1995). However, it is a definition that has an established pedigree and the volume of empirical work using that definition, as well as the coherent narrative emerging from it, means that it cannot be ignored.…”

“…This second dimensionality of individualism is important because it can spur individual actions contributing to the common good and support altruistic behaviour (e.g. Amini et al , 2022; Pitlik and Rode, 2017).…”
