Indoor Corrosion of Copper and Silver Exposed in Japan and ASEAN1 Countries

Abstract: Copper and silver test specimens were subjected to indoor exposure tests carried out at 23 sites in Tokyo, Bandung, Singapore, and Bangkok. At the same time, the deposition rates of H2S, SO2, NO2, HC1, and NaC1 particles which had deposited on the sampling devices were measured. Corroded specimen surfaces were examined by electron probe microanalysis, Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction, and corrosion rates were measured by the electrolyti… Show more

“…2,3,6 Ag2S is usually found predominant in indoor atmospheres. 14, [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] Silver sulfide is the product of the corrosion of silver by organosulfur compounds or H2S contaminants. For H2S, a concentration as low as 0.2 ppb has been shown to be sufficient to initiate silver sulfidation, 23 which makes H2S the most used gas to study silver gaseous sulfidation in laboratory.…”

“…The main reaction product of the sulphurous corrosion of silver is silver sulphide (Ag 2 S), a monoclinic crystal also known as argentite or acanthite [6,18]. In those environments slightly polluted with H 2 S, compounds such as sulphates, chlorides [19], and nitrates can be found on the silver surface, whereas Ag 2 S is the main reaction product in those sites heavily polluted with H 2 S [20]. If halogens such as bromine or iodine are also present, they can prevent sulphidation from taking place by forming silver bromide or iodide [18].…”
