Mycosphere 3(6), 926-933, Doi 10.5943 /mycosphere/3/6/6Lentinus tigrinus is a basidiomycetous fungus that is usually found growing in clusters on fallen logs of the forest. This mushroom is considered as the local counterpart of shiitake (L. edodes), since it is endemically growing in the tropical countries such as the Philippines. In our intention to develop production technology for this mushroom, we determined the influence of nutritional (local culture media) and physical (pH, aeration, illumination and temperature) factors for basidiospore germination and morphogenesis of wild strain of L. tigrinus. Basidiospores of L. tigrinus germinated efficiently in a submerged culture with potato sucrose broth (pH 7.5) incubated in a lighted air-conditioned room (23˚C) with a mean of 91.33% after 10h of incubation. A peculiar type of germination process was evident as the spore coat was retained, elongated and eventually became part of the hypha. A sequence of significant developmental stages; mycelial coat thickening, swelling formation, browning and primordial initiation arises prior to basidiomata maturation and basidiospores liberation. L. tigrinus is a further addition to the list of Philippine wild edible mushrooms with great potential for cultivation.

Purpose The research aimed to study the effects of size reduction and composting duration of empty fruit bunches (EFB) on straw mushroom production, and to examine the doses of fertilizers commonly used among farmers. Methods The experiment was done in two stages. The first stage was for identifying the optimum physical parameters of EFB, and the second stage focused on enhancing the performance of EFB chosen based on the findings of the first experiment. A randomized complete block design with 3 × 3 factorial arrangement in both stages of the study used the same approach. The first stage had three levels of aggregate sizes factor (S) and three levels of composting duration factor (C) of EFB. The second stage had three levels of NPK factor (N) and three levels of organic fertilizer factor (O). Results Whole stalk EFB had the highest productivity of 2458.47 ± 1015.23 g m −2. The supplementation of fertilizers increased the EFB decomposition rate and productivity to 2950.24 ± 208.50 g m −2 , and nutritive values (particularly for protein content of 41.00 ± 3.79%). Averaged biological conversion efficiency (BCE) was also improved from 3.61 ± 1.22 to 6.56 ± 0.46%. Conclusions EFB did not need to be cut into smaller pieces, and should not be composted for more than 8 days, because there was a tendency to decrease yield. Supplemental fertilizers increased the decomposition rates of EFB as well as the yield and nutritive values of straw mushroom. BCE can potentially be improved by increasing the dosages of fertilizers.

The rice-straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) has a distinct flavor, pleasant taste, and rich protein content. It has low production costs and a cropping duration of approximately 45 days-making it an effective means for poverty alleviation for those farmers who grow it. Farmers in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Cambodia grow it. Rice straw is one of the most common substrates used for growing this mushroom. The mushroom can grow well in both outdoor and indoor conditions; however, outdoor cultivation has risks of exposure to rain, wind, and/or high temperatures, all which reduce yield. The yield of indoor mushroom production is higher and more stable, as such, indoor growing is preferred. In addition to cultivation, this chapter also covers straw mushroom characteristics, cultivation principles and techniques, and rice straw substrate preparation.
