Indoor positioning technology assessment using analytic hierarchy process for pedestrian navigation services

Abstract: TF), Ultra Sound (US) and High Sensitivity GNSS (HSGNSS).This paper evaluates the practicality and fitness-to-the-purpose of pedestrian navigation for these stand-alone positioning technologies to identify the best one for the purpose of indoor pedestrian navigation. In this regard, the most important criteria defining a suitable positioning service for pedestrian navigation are identified and prioritised. They include accuracy, availability, cost, power consumption and privacy. Each technology is evaluated ac… Show more

“…Due to this issue, tracking data can be captured from several different sources such as Global navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers, e.g. GPS receivers embedded in mobile phones and In-Vehicle Navigation Devices, RFID tags and readers, video cameras and CCTVs, Bluetooth networks (Basiri et al 2015b(Basiri et al , 2017. Also large input data storage, retrieval and analysis could only be efficiently handled if the trajectories are stored in a graph database.…”

“…A recent review comparison on current indoor positioning technologies indicates that bluetooth low energy (BLE) is very affordable indoor positioning technology [1]. Following BLE, timing based Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology option scores almost as much as ultrasound.…”

“…However this growth has faced several challenges and obstacles, including the availability of accurate positioning technologies especially for indoor use [6][7], cost of the service, location privacy issues [8], high power consumption [9], and the user interface of the apps. Some of these challenges are not directly linked to the technology; such "non-technical" challenges, requirements and issues seem to be easier to handle or solved and having a better understanding of them can help the policy makers, manufacturers, service providers and developers to take actions on them and help the LBS markets to grow with a higher growth rate, attracting more users.…”
