Induced breeding of the riverine catfish Rita rita

Abstract: The paper reports the first incidence of successful induction of breeding in the riverine catfish Rita rita using carp pituitary gland (PG) extract. A breeding trial using four PG doses viz. 80, 100, 120 and 140mg/kg body weight of fish was conducted to optimize the dose of pituitary gland (PG) extract in terms of induction of ovulation in female. The male received a dose of 40mg PG/kg body weight in all cases and was sacrificed for collection of milt. The best performance was shown by the fish treated with 10… Show more

“…Earlier attempts have been made to study its length-weight (Lal and Dwevedi 1969), age and growth (Devi et al 1990), environmental impact assessment (Mukhopadhyay 1994), morphometric characters (Devi et al 1991), food (Devi et al 1992), maturity and fecundity (Saxena 1972), structure of the skin (Mital 1968) and reproductive biology of R. rita (Amin et al 2008). Recent success in induction of breeding of R. rita was performed by using PG (Mollah et al 2008).…”

“…The collected mature broods of Rita rita (Hamilton, 1822) were induced to spawn through hypophysation previously described by Mollah et al (2008). After that, the eggs were fertilized by the normal milt.…”

“…Two breeding trials of M. armatus were performed using PG extract in the present study. Earlier artificial breeding trials have been conducted with a number of species for standardizing the dose of PG for achieving satisfactory rate of ovulation, but an ambiguity remains among the doses used by the scientists (Khan, 1972;Thakur and Das, 1974;Khan and Mollah, 2004;Mollah et al, 2008;Taslima and Mollah, 2012). For induced breeding of M. armatus, selection of suitable inducing agents and optimization of doses are felt essential but much information on these aspects are not available in Bangladesh or elsewhere in the world except the attempt was taken by Mollah et al (2013) to breed the fish using different doses of PG but it was ended without any success.…”

“…Considering its high market demand, the riverine catfish R. rita could be a prospective candidate for aquaculture in Bangladesh and there is an urgent need to establish domestication, cultivation and artificial propagation of the species, to augment the natural population, meet the high demand and help in conservation of the species. Some attempts have been taken to develop culture techniques for the fish, such as induced breeding (Mollah et al, 2008), induced breeding and larval rearing (Taslima and Mollah, 2012) and effect of different feeds on growth and survival (Amin et al, 2010). But the influence of stocking density on the production of this important fish is yet to be elucidated.…”
