Induction and exacerbation of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus following mRNA‐based or adenoviral vector‐based SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination

Abstract: Correspondence urticarial and morbilliform eruptions. Less frequently seen reactions included chilblains, cosmetic filler reactions, herpes zoster or herpes simplex flares, and pityriasis rosea-like reactions. Only two patients had cutaneous vasculitis. Lupus-like skin lesions or lupus deterioration were not reported. 7 Strong agreement exists that all patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases should be vaccinated against COVID-19. However, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination should be considered as a potential trigger… Show more

“…The worsening of SCLE with the enlargement of pre-existing plaques on the trunk and emergence of new lesions has been observed in a 50-year-old woman with positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR (26). In addition, cases of Rowell syndrome and SCLE have been reported after COVID-19 vaccines but only a few reports incriminate the infection itself as a potential exacerbating factor (27)(28)(29)(30). Based on the clinical course of the disease, we suggest that the observed Rowell syndrome-like flare-up of CLE was related to the COVID-19 infection in our patient.…”

“…9 As both cutaneous lupus erythematosus is regarded as interferon-driven and COVID-mRNA vaccine effects are mediated by interferon I, a relation of both is evident, and the induction of CLE, especially in the context of SLE, may be expected. While an exacerbation of pre-existing SCLE after mRNA vaccination has lately been reported, 10,11 the new onset of SCLE after COVID-19 vaccination has not been described in A 65-year-old-woman presented to our outpatient clinic 2 months after the second injection of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine for a 5-month history of itchy eruption. The lesions started ten days after the first injection and worsened seven days after the second, given 3 months apart.…”
