This paper aims to present a simulation model for the analysis of the operational characteristics of electric motors (EMs). The model was developed on the Simulink platform of the MATLAB program and allows analysis in supply conditions with harmonics and voltage unbalance. The contribution of the model is that it considers the mechanical losses and provides for the study of the effect of each component of the electrical sequence of the harmonics and the voltage unbalance on the electromechanical characteristics of the EM. The model developed was tested in a 37.3 kW EM, operating under four power supply conditions: balanced sinusoidal voltages, balanced non-sinusoidal voltages (i.e., harmonics), unbalanced sinusoidal voltages, and non-sinusoidal unbalanced voltages. The results showed that under the conditions of harmonics and unbalance, the efficiency was reduced by 2%, respectively and that with the combined effects, the efficiency decreased by 4%. The results made it possible to quantify, from the current, voltage, and electrical power values of each sequence, the adverse effects caused by voltage unbalance and harmonics.

The installation of smart meters in the industry to monitor induction motors (IMs) provides easy access to the measurements of the electrical and mechanical variables, which improves the installation process. Using smart meters in industry requires temporary high-resolution data to improve the energy efficiency (EE) and power factor (PF) of IMs. For these purposes, Long Range (LoRa) is an ideal wireless protocol for the usage in industries due to its low energy consumption. In addition, it provides secure communications and long range indoors and outdoors. LoRa avoids the need to install antennas or routers to extend coverage, as each gateway can service 300 LoRa devices with distances of up to 10 km. For this purpose, this research successfully developed a new prototype for a low-cost IM Efficiency Monitoring System using LoRa (IMEMSL). IMEMSL is based on the Arduino open-source electronic platform. It sends the acquired data through the LoRa low-power wide-area-network (LPWAN) and cloud access gateway. This document describes the hardware and software design and implementation. The experimental results are presented and discussed. Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and time on air measured endorse the use of LoRa for this type of meters. The approximate cost of the prototype was €72 and €93 for the versions without and with Global Positioning System (GPS), respectively.

Nowadays, electric motors and frequency converters have a great variety of applications. In motor feedback systems, communication is performed over separate sensor cables, which are notable for their high cost. Power line communication (PLC) over the motor cable is a promising and cost effective alternative. In this paper, a communication concept based on PLC and direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) channel access method is presented for motor cable communication. The channel characteristics and noise in the channel of a laboratory test setup are studied. Effect of the frequency converter output and switching frequencies on the channel noise are investigated. Capacitive and inductive signal coupling methods are evaluated and compared first theoretically by measurements and analysis of channel characteristics, and then practically by data transmission tests carried out in the laboratory test setup. Software-defined radios (SDRs) are used as the data transmission devices for the communication concept evaluation. Concept's performance against variation of a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and switching frequency of the converter are evaluated. The concept applicability limits and optimal settings are presented. It can be stated that the concept provides a wider application range, than available solutions and can be effective for motor monitoring and speed data transmission.
