Induction of Liquid Crystalline Phases: Formation of Discotic Systems by Doping Amorphous Polymers with Electron Acceptors

Abstract: 9.869(1), b = 17.323(2), c = 16.083(3) A, = 94.85(1)", V = 2739.7(7) A', 2 = 4; 1606 independent reflections with I > 30(I): four-circle diffractometer, Cu,., 3" I 2 6 I 115". Lorentz, polarization, and adsorption corrections and corrections for linear decay were applied to the 3766 independent reflections collected. Anomalous dispersion corrections were applied for Co, K, and Na. The 35 non-hydrogen atoms were located using the SHELXTL Direct Methods programs and the hydrogen atom positions were located. “…Recently, molecular architectures, through self-assembly, processes by specific molecular interactions, such as hydrogen-bond, 6 -10 ionic, [11][12][13] ionic-dipolar, 14 and charge-transfer interaction 15 have been recognized to be a new strategy for building the molecular structure of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers, supramolecular SLCP. Hydrogen bonding is one of the most important means of interaction for these processes due to its stability and directionality.…”

“…95,96 Ringsdorf et al 95 used charge-transfer interactions between electron-rich triphenylene and 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone units to produce LC discotic polymers. Introduction of chirality into these charge-transfer polymeric complexes yields LC discotic polymers with helical order of the columns.…”

“…In an unrelated study involving main chain and side chain discotic liquid crystalline polymers, the induction of hexagonal columnar mesomorphism, its enhancement, and the induction of compatibility and mesomorphism in an incompatible polymer mixture via electron-donor acceptor interactions were reported. 4 , 24 The enhancement of mesomorphism of liquid crystalline polymers via non-covalent interactions was recently reviewed.…”
