Induction of microsomal cytochrome P450s by tire‐leachate compounds, habitat components of Aedes albopictus mosquito larvae

Abstract: Benzothiazole (BZT) and its derivatives are the major leachate compounds of automobile tires, the principal breeding habitat of Aedes albopictus, particularly in the United States. Effects of the compounds on insecticide toxicity, and activities and expression of microsomal cytochrome P450s (P450s) in the mosquito larvae were examined. Mosquito larvae were more tolerant to carbaryl, rotenone, and temephos when they were pre-exposed to tire-leachate compounds, particularly BZT. There was no change in toxicity f… Show more

“…27 TBP was found in small amounts in all samples, except in the sample from near Vinča where higher concentrations were detected. 30 It could be associated with the residues of automobile tires. They are well known contaminants in river water, sewage effluents and river sediments.…”

“…Although the phenomenon of Bt resistance has been associated with a mutation of gut receptors, this insecticide may have a role in the selection of larvae with better detoxifying abilities. Such a cumulative impact of both environmental and man‐made chemical variables on the evolution of metabolic resistance against xenobiotics is widely observed in mosquito populations (Suwanchaichinda & Brattsten 2002).…”
