The survival and reproduction of the beetle Paederus fuscipes Curtis on diets that differed in macronutrient composition were investigated in the laboratory. The sex organs of females fed each test diet were dissected to evaluate the ovarian development over time. Adults fed on a carbohydrate-rich diet lived longer than adults fed the other diets, but this diet provided insufficient nutrients for reproduction. Females fed on a protein-rich diet had high fecundity; however, the mean longevity of reproductive adult P. fuscipes significantly was shortened by 20-30 d compared with longevity of 60-70 d for adults fed a carbohydrate-rich diet. In contrast, adults that were provided lipid-rich diet had low survival and fecundity. Overall, the development ofprevitellogenic follicles was significantly affected by diet regime and days since starting a particular diet. The follicle size of females given protein-rich diet increased 0.5-fold 2 wk after beginning the diet. In contrast, the development of the follicles was slow in females given the carbohydrate-rich diet and the follicles degenerated in females given the lipid-rich diet. In terms of ovarian maturation, females fed on a protein-rich diet contained mostly vitellogenic and chorionated follicles. In contrast, the ovarioles of females on the carbohydrate-rich diet were largely occupied with previtellogenic and vitellogenic follicles, whereas for a lipid-rich diet, the follicles remained at the previtellogenic stage throughout the experiment.

Ovary development and maturation of Nezara viridula (L.) were evaluated by examining ovariole morphology and the alterations in the biochemical (protein synthesis related to reproduction) composition of the hemolymph. Quantitative and qualitative protein analyses were performed and ovary structural alterations for the pre-reproductive and reproductive stages were recorded. Total concentration of proteins in female hemolymph gradually increased until the end of the pre-mating stage, remaining unaltered thereafter. Proteins linked to reproduction (vitellogenins) appeared in the hemolymph 10 days after adult emergence and indicated the end of the pre-mating stage. After mating, total protein concentration in the hemolymph was lower compared to virgin females; vitellogenin levels were similar during most of the observation period. Oocyte development and maturation were gradual and age dependent. Ten-day-old females had chorionated oocytes ready for fertilization. Mating did not stimulate oocyte development in N. viridula, but the lack of mating activity appeared to have stimulated oocyte resorption in 17-day-old females.

T1C-19 is newly developed transgenic rice active against lepidopteran pests, and expresses a synthesized cry1C gene driven by the maize ubiquitin promoter. The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, is a major non-target pest of rice, and the rove beetle (Paederus fuscipes) is a generalist predator of N. lugens nymphs. As P. fuscipes may be exposed to the Cry1C protein through preying on N. lugens, it is essential to assess the potential effects of transgenic cry1C rice on this predator. In this study, two experiments (a direct feeding experiment and a tritrophic experiment) were conducted to evaluate the ecological risk of cry1C rice to P. fuscipes. No significant negative effects were observed in the development, survival, female ratio and body weight of P. fuscipes in both treatments of direct exposure to elevated doses of Cry1C protein and prey-mediated exposure to realistic doses of the protein. This indicated that cry1C rice had no detrimental effects on P. fuscipes. This work represents the first study of an assessment continuum for the effects of transgenic cry1C rice on P. fuscipes. Use of the rove beetle as an indicator species to assess potential effects of genetically modified crops on non-target arthropods is feasible.
