Industrial Ecology in the Age of Input-Output Analysis

Abstract: To some, industrial ecology is the field that seeks to understand and replicate the dense network of by-product exchanges found in the famous industrial district of Kalundborg, Denmark. To others, it is the attempt to look to natural systems for models for industrial design and practice. To still others, it is nearly any effort to mesh environmental concerns with production and consumption.A handbook on input-output analysis needs more clarity than this, both to provide context for the individual chapters and … Show more

“…MFA is closely connected to input-output analysis (IO). , One advantage of IO is its provision of a general mathematical model for the product-to-use-matrix, meaning it can accommodate possible change in technology, final demand, and institutional setting in a highly transparent manner . Based on our previous studies, ,, this study presents an IO-based dynamic model of MFA that can trace the fate of materials over time and across products in open-loop recycling, with explicit consideration of losses and quality of scrap.…”

“…15 LCA, in particular, has used input-output models extensively. An input-output LCA approach extends economic input-output tables to include data on resource use and environmental releases, which means that inputoutput LCA can quantify the material and energy flows through the complete supply chain of economic activity that is involved in producing the good or service (Lifset, 2009). 16 LCA can also utilize a hybrid approach that combines conventional processtype analysis and input-output analysis.…”

“…System is defined as “a structured assemblage of elements and subsystems that interact through interfaces and between the system and its environment” as is cited in Dijkema and Basson (, 158) . The systems approach analyzes the system and its environment, widening the scope of the study beyond the facility's physical boundaries, and consequently supports the decision‐making process (Lifset ). Thus a systems approach is generally useful, but because the evolution of EIPs shows features such as uncertainty and complex behavior, a more specific theoretical framework is needed for understanding their behavior.…”
