Industrial use of lipases to produce fatty acid esters

Abstract: Development of economical processes was necessary to commercialise this technology for the manufacture of cosmetic ingredients. Enzymatic production methods had to be established which could compete against standard established chemical synthetic methods. Now relatively simple esters are being produced enzymatically. Extensive purification procedures to clean up products after high temperature reaction steps are not required. Product quality and specifications, such as the acid and hydroxy values of commercial… Show more

“…Currently, the dominant natural source for high-quality WE is jojoba oil, though its high price limits most of its possible applications to cosmetic and medical products. WE may also be produced chemically or with immobilized lipases (39). Thus, there is at present and will be in the future a demand for an economically feasible biotechnological production of inexpensive jojoba oil-like WE from inexpensive substrates (40).…”

“…These compounds have odors of different fruits and are parts of complex mixtures providing specific aromas. Longer chain acids esters (C 18 ) are used in cosmetic industry as emollient for personal care applications [1].…”

“…However, the high price of jojoba oil has limited its use, which is currently restricted to medical and cosmetics applications as a basis for ointments, creams, and other care products. Today, wax esters are mainly produced chemically or by biotechnological processes employing immobilized lipases (10). However, even the lipase-based biotechnological wax ester production depends on fatty alcohols as substrates, which at present must be synthesized chemically.…”
