Industrialization and deindustrialization in Indonesia

Abstract: This paper argues that rising food staple prices can pose a significant barrier to the growth of labourintensive manufacturing by raising real wage rates. This is important because an expanding manufacturing sector has both comparative static and dynamic effects on labour productivity growth. The experience of Indonesia is used to illustrate these ideas. K E Y W O R D S

“…Therefore, there are several reasons for concern that can be used as arguments to place the population problem as a development priority. (Grabowski & Self, 2020) Indonesia's population has doubled in just 40 years, and the rate of population growth in the 2000-2010 period increased compared to the 1990-2000 period. Even though during the 1970s it seemed that the growth rate of Indonesia's population had already shown a downward trend.…”

“…New types of zones called Integrated Economic Development Zones (Kawasan Pengembangan Ekonomui Terpadu [KAPET]) (Rothenberg et al 2017) were introduced to accelerate regional development. The emergence of economic zones had transformative effects on the economic structure, as is evident from the share of manufacturing in GDP, which grew from 10% in 1970 to 27% by 1997 (Grabowski and Self 2020). The 1997 Asian financial crisis, followed by political regime change, hit Indonesia hard and took 6 long years to show recovery signs (Tijaja and Faisal 2014).…”
