“…In contrast, the data may disagree with those of Rodriguez et al (2002), who found that repeated (twice a day for 7 consecutive days) oral administration of aqueous artichoke leaf extract (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) to rats produced no significant differences in cholesterol, TG and phospholipids. The data are also not in agreement with (46) who reported insufficiency of cynarin, the active ingredient of artichoke (250 mg before meals either once or 3 times daily) as a therapeutic regimen in patients with familial type 2 hyperlipoproteinemia. The mean serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in patients with Type II hyperlipoproteinemia had not significantly changed within 3 months, neither with 250 mg nor 750 mg Cynarin daily.…”

“…Nonetheless, all the studies, except one, demonstrated statistically significant improvements in cholesterol and triglycerides levels. As a matter of fact, Heckers [52] administrated daily doses of 250 and 750 mg synthesis cynarin preparations for three months in 17 outpatients affected by familial type IIa or IIb hypercholesterolemia without observing any significant improvements in cholesterol and triglycerides levels, and came to the conclusion that cynarin was relatively ineffective as a therapeutic regimen in hyperlipemia. After the Polish investigator Wojcicki and collaborators had conducted studies with cynarin in the rat, they studied the influence of this compound, and then of artichoke extracts, in men of different ages affected by primitive or secondary hypercholesterolemia.…”

“…The intervention failed to produce any significant changes in cholesterol or triglyceride concentrations after 3 months of treatment [177]. None of the studies reported any significant adverse events or laboratory test abnormalities as a result of ALE treatment.…”
