Infantile Nystagmus and Visual Deprivation: Foveal Instability and Refractive Development in a Low Vision Register Series

Abstract: The prevalence of myopia and astigmatism was higher among children with nystagmus than in controls. Myopia was mainly juvenile, and not related to the period of infancy when the motor foveal smear is considered most disturbing and possibly influencing visual development.

“…There was more astigmatism in the albino (Albinism is inherited conditions in which there is a lack of pigmentation in the eyes and usually in the skin and hair as well) group (primarily with-the-rule; where the vertical meridian is steepest). 14 While In other study adolescent and adults myopic in albinos were less than idiopathic Congenital Nystagmus, [14][15][16][17][18][19][20] but in this recent study it no difference was found in type of refractive error result but study sample size was different. In our study only n=20 eyes were found hypermetric.…”

“…A study in 2011 data showed Out of total 170 Down Syndrome patients Nystagmus was observed in 18 patients. 15 Children with nystagmus had greater association of Myopia and astigmatism 16 . Some studies shows increment in Astigmatism with age 17 caused by constant oscillations of the eyeball.…”

“…Nystagmus‐blocking gaze directions reduce the ocular unrest and prolong foveation periods, but hardly allows stable fixation. Theoretically, deprivation‐like mechanisms are triggered, which might fit into the factual pattern of more myopia in our recent series than in the population (Fledelius & Jensen ). This is in keeping with two other studies (Nathan et al.…”

“…This issue was analysed in a recent study (Fledelius & Jensen ). Hereditary factors are acknowledged in only a low percentage in infantile nystagmus syndrome, and most cases appear sporadic (Abel ; Hertle ).…”
