Infection of KSHV and Interaction with HIV: The Bad Romance

Abstract: Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), namely, human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), is considered as the pathogen of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), the most frequent cancer in untreated HIV-infected individuals. Patients infected with HIV have a much higher possibility developing KS than average individual. Researchers have found that HIV, which functions as a cofactor of KS, contributes a lot to the development of KS. In this article, we will give a brief introduction of KS and KSHV and how the interaction between K… Show more

“…Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also named human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), is the etiologic agent of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), and multicentric Castleman’s disease (MCD) [1,2,3]. KS is an endothelial-originated multicentric malignant neoplasm found in immunosuppressed patients, and most frequently in patients infected with HIV [1,4]. In contrast, PEL is a rare and aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that typically presents as a lymphomatous effusion without forming a solid mass [5].…”

“…Uganda has a high prevalence of KSHV [4, 5] and a high incidence of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) [6, 7]. The incidence of KS rises dramatically among immunocompromised individuals [810]; immunosuppression has been implicated in the reactivation of KSHV and the progression of KS [9, 11].…”

“…In fact, they would have higher HCV viral loads and experience more rapid HCV disease progression than those free of HIV infection [ 19 ]. Co-infection is very common because it does not require both viruses to enter a host organism coincidentally since most species do carry latent herpesviruses in cells and are also susceptible to retrovirus infection [ 20 , 21 ]. It is estimated that there are 130 million HCV infections worldwide, with approximately 4–5 million of them being co-infected with HIV [ 22 ].…”
