Infection status of human parvovirus B19, cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex Virus-1/2 in women with first-trimester spontaneous abortions in Chongqing, China

Abstract: BackgroundInfection with Parvovirus B19 (B19V), Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Herpes Simplex Virus-1/2 (HSV-1/2) may cause fetal loses including spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death and non-immune hydrops fetalis. Few comprehensive studies have investigated first-trimester spontaneous abortions caused by virus infections in Chongqing, China. Our study intends to investigate the infection of B19V, CMV and HSV-1/2 in first-trimester spontaneous abortions and the corresponding immune response.Methods100 abo… Show more

“…The pups displayed physical abnormalities that resembled hydrops fetalis, which is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the fetus. Hydrops fetalis is seen in RVFV-infected livestock ( 36 ) and has been noted as a prominent occurrence in pregnant women infected with parvovirus and Zika ( 37 , 38 ). Most humans infected with RVFV develop mild febrile disease, and our study suggests that mild infection of pregnant women may still have devastating impacts on the developing fetus.…”

“…All aborted women were CMV IgM negative while CMV IgG was almost close (95 %). 15 It may be due to the differences in traditions and social habits and hygiene standards. In the present study, the rate of CMV IgG and CMV IgM in aborted women living in rural areas than in those living in urban.…”

“…During pregnancy, viral infections may or may not cause clinical indications in the mother. Viruses that have crossed the placental barrier and entered the fetus could have catastrophic consequences for fetal development [6,7]. Because their CNS is not fully developed at birth or is still immature after birth, fetuses, and infants are at greater risk of viral damage.…”
