This review aims to update the knowledge of the epidemiology of Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) in Indonesia and Southeast Asia and provide a perspective on the control options for BVDV in the Indonesian cattle population in the future. Studies on BVDV in Indonesia, since its first report in that country, and the updated beef and dairy cattle industries are reviewed. In ten of 34 provinces, BVDV is endemic. The subgenotypes of BVDV-1a and BVDV-1c are predominant in Indonesian cattle. However, BVDV is currently not a priority disease to control in Indonesia. Cattle imports from Australia appear to be potentially the most significant source of transmission of BVDV into native cattle, but the control of BVDV conducted in the local quarantine facilities is currently not achieving the aim of controlling BVDV; thus, complementary measures are needed. With the small-scale nature of the vast majority of cattle breeding in the country, the control of BVDV in provinces in which cattle breeding is economically essential may need to be organised by regional and provincial governments. Gaps in our knowledge of BVDV are identified in this review, and strategies for the control of BVDV in Indonesia are discussed.

This research aims to study the quantitative structure and activity relationship (QSAR) of gamma-carboline derivative compounds as anti-BVDV agents to get an equation that can predict the value of the anti-BVDV activity of gamma-carboline derived compounds. The research material is experimental EC50 data that convert to anti-BVDB activity. 14 gamma-carboline derivative compounds are divided into 2 groups, namely, 11 fitting compounds and 3 test compounds. QSAR analysis is based on multilinear regression calculations of the fitting compound by plotting the EC50 log as the dependent variable and the descriptor as the independent variable. The used descriptors are atomic net charge (q) and dipole moment (µ), which are involved in calculations using the AM1 semiempirical quantum mechanics method. In addition, the partition coefficient of n-octanol/water (Log P), molecular polarizability (α), molecular weight (BM), Van Der Waals surface area (A vdw), Van Der Waals volume (V vdw), and index of refraction (RD) are obtained from QSAR properties. The resulting QSAR equation is: Log pEC50 = -48.670 – 124.801 (qC11) – 12.661 (α) – 0.918 (µ) – 0.876 (RD) – 0.999 (Log P) + 1.863 (BM) + 0.043 (V vdw) with n = 14; r = 0.937; r2 = 0.878; SD = 0.244; Fcount/Ftable = 1.466; PRESS = 0.749; Sig. = 0.02 This equation can be used as an initial guide for designing the structure of new compounds of the gamma-carboline class by considering some of the most influential descriptors. Consequentially, new compounds can be designed that have a smaller predicted EC50 value than the known compounds derived from gamma-carboline.

With the increasing human population, livestock farming has been intensified over the years to support different products from farm animals. Hence, the requirement to monitor livestock diseases becomes critical. In particular, outbreaks due to viral diseases are a major concern for the livestock industry worldwide. It has been observed that close interaction of humans-livestock could lead to transboundary diseases. Hence detection of potential viral pathogens requires a deeper understanding of the livestock virome. The rapid development of bioinformatics and computational tools, as well as advances in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies, has opened up new options for infectious disease surveillance in terms of both quality and scale. The phrase “systems biology” has just been recently adopted to define cutting-edge cross-disciplinary biology research. Synthetic biology, integrative biology, systems biomedicine, and metagenomics are some of the growing post-genomic domains that intersect with systems biology. Systems biology represents a paradigm shift in biology and medicine from many perspectives by incorporating a new culture that acknowledges the dynamic and interdependent interactions of the complex network of genes and their associated proteins in order to gain a systematic understanding of biology, health, and disease. By enhancing our understanding of viral disease development, diagnosis, prevention, and therapy, the application of systems biology to human and veterinary medicine has the potential to transform healthcare. The current chapter focuses on examples of various viral diseases associated with livestock animals and the role of systems biology approaches to understand them.
