Infectious disease transmission: survey of contacts between hospital-based healthcare workers and working adults from the general population

Abstract: HCWs' contacts differ substantially from those of community-based working adults. HCWs may thus be at higher risk of acquiring and spreading contact-transmissible and respiratory infections due to the nature of their work. Whereas total number of contacts was fairly similar between HCW types, the characteristics of their contacts differed substantively.

“…Hospitals and medical staff played the most important role in the treatment of respiratory infectious diseases. Due to the progression of the illness and many patients seeking medical care in the hospital, human-to-human infection was more likely to occur than other places, so more strict protections should be taken [19,20]. The medical staff, especially those in infectious disease department, emergency department, respiratory department and other departments related with infectious disease prevention, should have the ability to discern patients with respiratory infectious diseases and take protective measures [21][22][23].…”

“…2 Furthermore, HCW contacts can differ substantially from those of individuals in the community; a study of HCWs reported more work-related contacts than community-based working adults. 3 Thus, HCWs may be at higher risk of acquiring infections due to the nature of their work. 3 Monitoring infective symptoms among HCWs might be a feasible means of surveillance for emerging infections 2,4 ; however, surveillance is time-consuming.…”
