Infective Endocarditis After Renal Transplantation

Abstract: Background:Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious complication in immunosuppressive patients that has adverse effects. Objectives:The aim of this study was to define the characteristics, outcomes, and correlating factors of mortality in renal transplant recipients.Patients and Methods:Infective endocarditis was diagnosed in 22 patients from three renal transplant centers in Iran between 2000 and 2010. Modified Duke criteria were applied to confirm the diagnosis.Results:Twenty-two renal transplant patients wit… Show more

“…Infective endocarditis is an associated risk for (pre-transplant) patients undergoing dialysis and/or with kidney disease. There are limited reports of bacterial endocarditis after kidney transplantation (Moshkani Farahani et al, 2014;Tamzali et al, 2021). Whether the observed decrease in the relative abundance of these ASVs is associated with dialysis and disease removal or transplantassociated should be an area of future investigation.…”

“…Taken together, a reduction in these genera could represent a lower risk of bacterial endocarditis, a rare but high mortality complication (Moshkani Farahani et al, 2014;Tamzali et al, 2021), in the posttransplant recipient group (Ioannou et al, 2021).…”

“…IE is a rare complication of immunosuppressive therapy, especially on native valves. There are several reports of endocarditis occurring during or after initiation of immunosuppressive drug therapies in patients with a variety of diseases in the literature (Ihara et al, ; Moshkani Farahani et al, ), including atopic dermatitis which is a relatively less severe dermatological disease compared to PV (Tanioka, Iwata, Marumoto, & Kaneko, ). To the best of our knowledge, there are only two reported cases of patients who developed IE on native valves (Kayrak, Bacaksiz, Gul, & Sonmez, ), and one on a prosthetic valve (Namnyak, Bhat, Al‐Jama, & Fathalla, ) while undergoing PV therapy.…”

“…Patients who undergo a solid organ transplantation have a high rate of complication with a bacteremic episode, when compared to the general population especially with staphylococci and enterococci [ 1 ]. Enterococcus species have evolved to become a very important pathogen causing endocarditis in renal transplant patients [ 2 ]. Further, over the last few decades it has become the 2nd most common pathogen in the subgroup of healthcare-acquired bacterial endocarditis, second only to Staphylococcus aureus [ 3 ].…”
