Infiltration of dendritic cells into regional lymph nodes in gastric cancer

Abstract: Background. Dendritic cells (DC), including epidermal Langerhans cells, are potent antigen‐presenting cells that can carry and present tumor antigens to helper T‐cells. An immunohistochemical study was performed to clarify the relationship between the extent of infiltration by DCs in primary gastric cancer and that in the regional lymph nodes. Methods. Paraffin blocks were prepared for staining with antibody against S‐100 protein in 121 cases of gastric cancer. Infiltration of S‐100 protein‐positive DCs was ev… Show more

“…14 LCs infiltrate different tumors, including cervical cancer, and have been shown to be associated with a better prognosis. [15][16][17] This observation, associated with the decreased density of LCs in most cervical SILs, suggests that a quantitative and/or qualitative disturbance of LCs could interfere with the immune surveillance of HPVassociated cervical (pre)neoplastic lesions.…”

“…Tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) were proposed to induce lymphangiogenesis and angiogenesis, and it was shown that local infiltration of certain types of TANs may play a role in the metastasis in GC (Hiramatsu et al, 2018). Infiltration of dendritic cells in gastric cancer and lymph nodes of GC patients are well known (Tsujitani et al, 1992;Tsujitani et al, 1995), and its infiltrating level in GC was also found to be closely correlated with macrophage infiltration (Xiang et al, 2020). One study found that higher level of dendritic cell infiltration was associated with longer OS (Higgins and Thompson, 2002;Hu et al, 2014).…”

“…The relationship between the histological metastasis in lymph nodes and the immune response was reported in previous studies. Focusing on gastric cancer, Tsujitani et al (32) investigated the infiltration of DCs into regional lymph nodes by using immunohistochemical staining against S-100 protein. They found that there was a significant correlation between the extent of infiltration by DCs in the primary tumor and that of the peritumoral nodes.…”

“…Mature DCs activated in the primary tumor might play a role as self-immune defense mediators in the regional LNs. Tsujitani et al (32) suggested that DCs in the regional LNs are important for establishing immunological defense mechanisms in cases of gastric cancer. The relation between the extent of LN metastasis, especially MM, and the immune response based on the maturation status of DCs in the regional LNs in gastric cancer patients is still uncertain.…”
