Infiltration Test Plot Study for Mine Rock Piles at Questa Mine, New Mexic0

Abstract: An infiltration test plot study has been initiated at the Questa mine, located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. The objective of this study is to determine the key processes controlling infiltration into the mine rock piles. This study is part of a comprehensive site investigation carried out in support of the development of a closeout plan for the Molycorp Questa Mine. From 1965 to 1983 large-scale open pit mining at the Questa mine produced over 297 million tonnes of mine rock, which… Show more

“…Recharge is also extremely difficult to measure. When it is measured, lysimeters are usually used (Wels et al, 2002b), but the installation of a lysimeter is difficult and costly, and in excavating and backfilling the lysimeter the structure and hydraulic characteristics of the soil profile are inevitably altered from the natural state. Hence there is always a doubt as to whether lysimeter outflows realistically represent natural recharge.…”

“…According to the literature, the proportion of rainfall that infiltrates a stockpile surface is a function of both rainfall intensity and duration, and the coal bed's water infiltration capacity, which is determined by the bed's texture, structure, and initial moisture content [25,26]. Once saturation is achieved, any increase in rainfall intensity only leads to an increase in runoff, provided that the sample remains undisturbed.…”

“…However, humid air does provide the moisture needed for the geochemical reactions observed in some zones of the rock piles (Jerz, 2002, Jerz andRimstidt, 2004). Some water is lost to evaporation as shown by pan evaporation tests, lysimeter tests, analysis of climatic data (Wels et al, 2001(Wels et al, , 2002Robertson GeoConsultants Inc., 2000b and the stable isotopes studies (Fig. 114).…”
