Inflammation, ageing and diseases of the lung: Potential therapeutic strategies from shared biological pathways

Abstract: Lung diseases disproportionately affect elderly individuals. The lungs form a unique environment: a highly elastic organ with gaseous exchange requiring the closest proximity of inhaled air containing harmful agents and the circulating blood. The lungs are highly susceptible to senescence, with age and ‘inflammageing’ creating a pro‐inflammatory environment with a reduced capacity to deal with challenges. While lung diseases may have disparate causes, the burden of ageing and inflammation provides a common pro… Show more

“…Additionally, the presence of multiple comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorders can complicate the clinical picture, leading to overlapping symptoms and diagnostic challenges [ 12 ]. The age-related decline in lung function and muscle strength exacerbates symptoms and impairs the ability to effectively clear respiratory secretions, increasing susceptibility to infections like pneumonia and exacerbations of chronic respiratory conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma [ 6 , 7 , 13 ].…”

“…Inflammaging is an age-dependent chronic increase in basal systemic inflammation [31,32]. Inflammaging, along with other alterations, may predispose to the development of lung diseases in aged individuals, such as malignancies, COPD, autoimmunity and infectious diseases, and interstitial pneumonia [33].…”
