Inflammation and repair in the mammalian fetus: A Reappraisal

Abstract: Review of our recent experimental findings and published studies indicates that the mammalian fetus responds to injury in a similar way to adult animals. Persistent inflammatory stimuli evoke an extensive cellular response whose composition varies with the stage of gestation and which is succeeded by formation of typical scar tissue. In fetal sheep excisional skin wounds and wounds in bone, muscle, tendon, and nerve heal by scar. There is disagreement whether, early in gestation, sutured incised skin wounds he… Show more

“…Gastric wounds made in early-gestation fetal sheep also heal with scar [19] as do intestinal wounds made in fetal rabbits [20]. Scar also forms after wounding fetal nerve tissue [21][22][23], trachea, and myocardium [24][25][26]. These findings are consistent with observations for human fetal surgery in which extensive adhesions have been found following fetal diaphragmatic hernia repair [27].…”

“…However, when an inflammatory substance was administered in fetuses during the gestation period when scarring does not occur, macrophages were reported to be recruited to the injection sites. 5,6 In addition, in E16 mouse fetuses in which histological cutaneous regeneration is known to occur, macrophages were recruited to the wound surface, but Mac-1-positive activated macrophages were reported to be limited in number. 7 These findings indicate that even at the stage when fetal cutaneous regeneration occurs, inflammatory cells exist and may respond to inflammation.…”
