Inflammation, Thrombosis, and Destruction: The Three-Headed Cerberus of Trauma- and SARS-CoV-2-Induced ARDS

Abstract: Physical trauma can be considered an unrecognized "pandemic" because it can occur anywhere and affect anyone and represents a global burden. Following severe tissue trauma, patients frequently develop acute lung injury (ALI) and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) despite modern surgical and intensive care concepts. The underlying complex pathophysiology of life-threatening ALI/ARDS has been intensively studied in experimental and clinical settings. However, currently, the coronavirus family has beco… Show more

“…A feature of the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19 is the simultaneous presence of an infectious process and trauma (vascular damage) [ 86 ]. Treatment of these two conditions involves alternative activities of the immune system, the main regulators of which are macrophages.…”

“…Acute lung injury and ARDS can arise from a wide range of trauma-related events, often associated with blunt mechanisms and chest injury [11]. Immunopathophysiology of ARDS in respiratory tissues caused by severe tissue trauma tends to follow a classic pattern of destruction, inflammation, thrombosis and destruction [11].…”

“…Acute lung injury and ARDS can arise from a wide range of trauma-related events, often associated with blunt mechanisms and chest injury [11]. Immunopathophysiology of ARDS in respiratory tissues caused by severe tissue trauma tends to follow a classic pattern of destruction, inflammation, thrombosis and destruction [11]. In primary blast lung, the destruction phase includes parenchymal injury and haemorrhage, but a mechanistic understanding of the physical and biological factors which lead to tissue damage are not well understood [1].…”
