Inflammatory activation in children with primary hypertension

Abstract: Low-grade inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of primary hypertension (PH) and target organ damage (TOD). We evaluated the profile of inflammatory mediators (CRP, RANTES, MIP-1beta, MIP-1alpha, MCP-1, IL-6, angiogenin, adiponectin) in 30 healthy children (12.7 +/- 3.3 years) and 44 patients with untreated PH (13.7 +/- 2.7 years; n.s). Patients had greater concentrations of CRP, MIP-1beta, and RANTES than controls (all p < 0.05). Children with metabolic syndrome (MS) had greater CRP than children with… Show more

“…Through these effects, adiponectin prevents the development of atherosclerosis while still in early stages. Adiponectin association with vascular changes appears since paediatric ages, as its levels are positively correlated with brachial artery distensibility [52], and inversely correlated with the internal media thickness (IMT) of carotid arteries (cIMT) [56][57][58][59]. However, some intervention programmes did not find any correlation between adiponectin improvement and cIMT [13], cIMT variation [60], or retinal vessel diameter [61].…”

“…3537 Data from our study (Table 1) demonstrate higher plasma insulin and hsCRP among the obese adolescents compared to both overweight and normal weight adolescent participants. In contrast, FGF23 was significantly higher among adolescents in overweight and obesity groups compared to normal weight groups.…”
